Mitsubishi charges into top three with record PHEV sales month
Mitsubishi takes third spot for September and FYTD total sales – ahead of Mazda and Holden.
1,213 registrations in September – a 19% year-on-year increase
September sales include highest-ever Outlander PHEV result (54 units), alongside 450 Triton, 315 ASX, 200 Outlander and 124 Eclipse Cross.
Just one month after the release of the new 19MY Outlander PHEV, Mitsubishi Motors NZ’s market-leading plug-in hybrid SUV has recorded its highest-ever monthly sales figure – a result that has helped to propel the brand to third spot in the market and its most successful September for 24 years.
At $55,990 (plus On-Road Costs), the new Outlander PHEV VRX was launched at a price point $8,000 below the previous top-of-the-range model, making it the most luxurious and affordable PHEV that MMNZ has ever released.
MMNZ Chief Operating Officer Daniel Cook attributed the new model’s lower price point as a key factor for increased customer uptake, alongside rising fuel costs and an expanding national network of charging stations.
“Outlander PHEV has led its class since its release in 2014; in our latest edition, we wanted to make the PHEV even more accessible to Kiwis looking to embrace this alternative technology,” said Cook. “We are very pleased to have been able to do that and it is extremely rewarding to see more customers enjoying the benefit.”
Outlander PHEV has an electric range of 54km and a combined range of over 600km. DC Fast Charge capability can recharge the battery from 0 to 80% in around 20 minutes.
Triton tracking well
Triton 2WD and 4WD models shared near 50:50 of the spoils in September, with 230 and 220 registrations respectively. MMNZ’s highest-selling vehicle has enjoyed a strong run since Fieldays, with the highly popular 4WD GLS Black Edition being swiftly followed by a run-out deal on the 2WD GLX-R Double Cab.
“Triton is our star performer again, boosted strongly by the arrival of the 2WD GLX-R in August,” said Cook. “We are pleased to have been able to put earlier supply issues behind us and feed the ongoing appetite for our tried and trusted ute.”
The five-star safety rated 2WD GLX-R features an efficient 2.4L Turbo Diesel engine with 7.1L/100km fuel economy, 17” alloys, sports suspension, cruise control, a reversing camera and daytime-running lights. Standard features include Smartphone Link Display Audio (SDA).
Strength in depth
Cook pointed to the strong collective performance of Mitsubishi’s SUV and crossover range as further evidence of the brand’s close alignment with contemporary Kiwi lifestyles, supported by class-leading customer service.
“Between ASX, Outlander and Eclipse Cross, we have a dynamic group of stylish and economical vehicles completely in step with current Kiwi attitudes to fun, family and freedom at an affordable price.
“Further to that, our approach has been to provide the best customer experience possible, from the moment they enter the showroom right through to the moment they start considering their next Mitsubishi.
“In August we announced the rollout of a new global standard in showroom design; last month our Customer Care Centre won its seventh Supreme Award; and we still offer New Zealand’s leading new car Diamond Advantage warranty.
“Our financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March – we are only halfway through our current cycle, and we are tracking more strongly than ever.
“We are extremely proud to take the coveted third place in the market – this is a clear reflection of the confidence Kiwis have in our product.”
